Smart solutions for power generation to support the energy transition

At POWER-GEN Europe 2017, Mitsubishi Electric presented scalable automation and electrical solutions for the key issues faced by the power generation industry today. Requirements for increased flexibility and greater efficiency are both addressed, in addition to staying competitive during the energy transition process.

A picture of today’s power generation sector is an industry where outages need to be reduced. Where increasingly stringent legislative targets must be met and where greater levels of renewables have to be integrated. This includes the recent update to the EU’s energy targets, which include a 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions, a 20% share for renewable energy and a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, all by 2020.
A 2030 climate and energy framework then calls for even more action in the following decade, reducing greenhouse gases by forty percent, creating a 27% share for renewables and achieving at least a twenty percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to those of 1990. Mitsubishi Electric is demonstrating a range of smart automation solutions that help meet this challenge.

Solutions for automation and electrical
Morteza Seraj, Director Process Automation at Mitsubishi Electric’s Factory Automation – European Business Group explains how effective control and automation holds the key to addressing the re-defining process within the power generation industry. “Energy transition means combining more, often smaller scale, power sources into an intelligent network and maximizing the efficiency of each one. This is why Mitsubishi Electric offers scalable and individual solutions for the automation and electrical needs of the whole sector. We are individually servicing customers who are managing existing plants, constructing a new plant, upgrading an existing plant, or working to integrate and balance a number of different energy sources.”

Customer-oriented technologies and individual services
The portfolio of technologies now available from Mitsubishi Electric for the power generation industry is highly customer-oriented. Application specific solutions are suitable for both new-build and retrofit projects. More universal solutions start with plant electrical, automation and control equipment and extend all the way to a highly sophisticated virtual power plant (VPP) control solution that can integrate and optimise multiple power supply and generation resources.
