Fira de Barcelona will host CPHI in 2023

Following the recently held CPHI, which was hosted in Frankfurt, the 2023 edition will take place from October 24 to 26 at the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona, which previously hosted the event in 2016.

The pharma event, organised by Informa Markets, has established itself as the leading platform for the global pharmaceutical and chemical industry and is replicated with local editions in China, India, Japan, Korea, Europe, the United States, Middle East and Southeast Asia.

CPHI Barcelona will showcase the latest innovations in all areas of pharma from ingredients and generics, to capsules and excipients, machinery, packaging, biopharmaceuticals, and contract services. It will bring together cutting-edge innovators, major pharma companies and drug developers alongside consultants, suppliers, and outsourcing service providers.

The event features both an exhibition and a thought leadership-driven congress where the main challenges for the future of the sector will be discussed.

According to Constantí Serrallonga, General Manager of Fira de Barcelona, “the arrival of a trade fair this large reinforces Fira’s role as a venue for world-class events, especially in the medical and technological fields. Above all, it is great news for the city and its surroundings, as the impact and legacy of such a trade fair in terms of business, innovation, opportunities and positioning is of great relevance“.

Orhan Caglayan, Group Director at Informa Markets, added: “We are very excited to return to Barcelona to celebrate a new edition of CPHI, as it is the perfect city to host a leading event like ours, both for its modern venues, as well as its infrastructure, connectivity, expertise, climate and gastronomy. We have already started to prepare the next edition with our partners at Fira de Barcelona, which we are sure will be a great success”.

The industry is already looking forward to CPHI Barcelona in 2023 to be held at the Fira Barcelona (24 – 26 October 2023). With no travel restrictions expected in 2023, the event is likely to see record numbers of international attendees and exhibitors, especially as global pharma supply networks expand, and outsourcing continues to proliferate. Then in 2024, CPHI Middle East will open for the first time in Riyadh (15-17 January 2024), creating a new pharma hub for manufacturers and innovators to access this fast-growing pharma region.

Adam Andersen, Informa’s Executive Vice President, Pharma added, “What we have seen throughout CPHI Frankfurt is that our in-person and digital platforms add real-world value and deepen conversations with partners. The event is at the heart of all pharma partnering and, post-pandemic, we have seen many new attendees at the event. For the most part, these new executives are senior pharma industry leaders with specific partnering and supply requirements that they are meeting through CPHI’s online and in person platforms.”

Barcelona capital of medical and pharmaceutical events

The announcement of CPHI Barcelona‘s arrival at Fira adds to the more than 30 medical and scientific events that the institution is holding this year at the Gran Via, Montjuïc and CCIB venues, and to the busy 2023 calendar of upcoming events in these fields, such as:

  • Infarma,
  • the European Congress on Cardiac Arrhythmia (EHRA),
  • the European Congress on Cardiovascular Imaging (AECVI),
  • the world congresses on Gastrointestinal Medicine, Gynecological Cancer, Parkinson or brain diseases (ECNP).

CPHI Frankfurt returned to pre-pandemic strength as pharma industry booms again

The global pharma industry was out in full force at CPHI Frankfurt in November with 40,405 executives from 167 countries visiting the 2022 edition of the world-leading pharma industry tradeshow, a huge 75% increase over the number of attendees in 2021. Final visitor numbers will be confirmed by independent auditors ABC in early 2023.

The increase in visitor numbers was all the more impressive because many visitors from China – who usually make up around 10% of the show’s in person audience – were prevented from attending CPHI Frankfurt by COVID-related travel restrictions.

Reflecting the robust strength of the pharma industry, visitor attendance from major markets in Europe and the USA was comparable to the pre-pandemic 2019 event, which was the largest single gathering of pharma executives in CPHI’s thirty-two year history.
